Threads of Heritage
Threads of Heritage is a conceptual photographic study of the Nauvari saree as a symbol of Maharashtrian cultural identity. The project presents the Nauvari not just as traditional attire, but as an expression of strength, continuity, and evolving femininity. The nine-yard drape appears in various regional and ceremonial styles, ranging from functional forms to richly adorned celebrations. Traditional jewellery such as the nath, chandrakor bindi, necklaces, bangles, and kamarpatta completes the visual identity, reinforcing cultural symbolism. The series moves from shadow to light. Initial images emphasize structure and inner strength through controlled lighting, while later compositions introduce colour and festivity. In these images, the Nauvari in its varied drapes and ornamental richness transforms into a symbol of celebration and cultural continuity. The project is guided by three central themes: Strength: reflected through posture, structural draping, and visual intensity Grace : expressed through movement, balance, and the fluid fall of fabric Festivity: conveyed through colour, adornment, interaction, and atmosphere Through the contrast between shadow and illumination, and through the documentation of different Nauvari styles and traditional jewellery, this body of work presents the saree as more than a garment. It becomes a living cultural form that connects personal identity with shared heritage, past with present, and tradition with contemporary visual expression.
